Donaldson Correctional Facility, Bessemer, AL— January 30, 2021 officers at Donaldson Correctional Facility, 100 Warrior Lane, Bessemer, AL 35023-7299 instigated an attack on multiple incarcerated people, resulting in activist Robert Earl Council aka Kinetik Justice being airlifted to UAB’s Trauma Unit with severe head injuries. 

According to an anonymous source, guards had been particularly brutal to them the entire week, including an attack on an elder, Cat Diamond, by Sgt. Binder and Sgt. Johnson in the facility’s kitchen. At 1:30am Officer Griffin came onto the unit and continued the pattern of antagonizing inmates, ultimately threatening, “You think you’re tough, we’ll get some spray on you.” He then called the code which brought in officers who proceeded to mace everyone. 

As Robert Earl Council was attempting to return to his cell, Officer Milton recognized him as an organizer and maced him, then proceeded to beat him with a baton. While Council was on the ground, Officer Milton, Sgt. Binder, Officer Griffin, and Sgt. Brown continued to beat him with batons, breaking open his head and knocking out a tooth from the root, beating him until he was unconscious. Videos show copious amounts of blood from the attack, as well as Council’s tooth. 
 Calls to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital confirmed Council is a patient in their trauma unit.

This incident comes on the heels of a Department of Justice investigation that recently found the Alabama Department of Corrections in violation of numerous prisoner civil rights.
